Meditation

What is meditation?

There are various types of meditation – prayer is one of the best known but there are many other types as well, including, concentrative meditation, transcendental meditation, mindfulness meditation, Zen meditation, Buddhist meditation and Taoist meditation.

They all have one thing in common – that is, they all focus on quietening the mind.  Learning to breathe properly, (which many of us do not know how to do!!) and directing your focus to one healing element, a word, a sound, an image, or simply one’s own breath.

Meditation is about stilling the mind, allowing your mind activity to settle, all random thoughts are temporarily put on hold, filling the mind and body with a feeling of calm and peace.

What are the benefits of Meditation?

Relieves insomnia;

It is a form of stress management;

Eliminating anxiety;

Relieving depression;

Boosting intelligence;

Boosting creativity;

Boosting confidence;

Slow ageing;

Meditation tends to normalize blood pressure, pulse rate and the levels of stress hormones in the blood.

It produces noticeable changes in the brain wave patterns, which exhibit a decrease in excitability.

Meditation also raises the pain threshold

Meditations can complement medical treatment of any dis-ease

It is a wonderful health prevention measure.

Who will benefit from Meditation?

Without a doubt - EVERYONE!!!  We all need to still our minds and focus on our breath.  We all need to ground ourselves, particularly in this busy world where pressures are high and life is fast paced.  The body and mind are not designed for such a life, yet it is unavoidable.  Meditation enhances our daily activities of work, relaxation and sleep.  Meditation can always improve our quality of life, promote well-being and healing from within.

Meditation will also benefit those who are suffering particular conditions such as:

Anxiety;

Panic attacks;

Nervousness;

Nervous or physical tension;

Stress-related illness;

Stress-related physical discomfort;

Depression;

A sense of not coping;

Fatigue;

Constant exhaustion;

Restlessness;

Insomnia;

Un-refreshing sleep;

Low self-esteem;

Poor creativity;

High blood pressure.

You will experience relaxation, increased awareness, mental focus, clarity and a sense of peace, if meditation is practiced regularly.

Is meditation a religious practice?

It can be, but not necessarily.  As I said before, prayer is among the most commonly known forms of meditation.  However, one does not necessarily need to pray to meditate.  Almost everyone has already meditated.  Every time you wash the dishes or are ‘off with the fairies' and unaware of your surroundings, you are probably meditating. Every time you are driving on auto pilot and you reach your destination but you cannot recall how you got there, you were probably in a meditative state.

Meditation is used by many walks of life, from all religious groups and spiritual belief systems.  Depending on your beliefs, you may be in touch with your inner child, your higher self, your soul, God, the spirit world or simply the silence within you, when you are in a meditative state.

What is the difference between Meditation and Relaxation?

Relaxation is a benefit of meditation.  There are many ways in which to relax, having a coffee with a friend, watching a movie, having a bath, a massage or sun baking on the beach.  Relaxation still engages the thought process, whereas meditation transcends the thought process.  That is, through meditation, the mind becomes still and focused – not removing stimuli, but working through it to a different level, producing a deep state of relaxation.
